Fresh from Recording CD #3, Solstice Promises to Shine

San Geronimo – Following two sold-out standing ovation concerts at San Geronimo in as many years it’s hard to imagine how this year’s a cappella performance by Solstice could please the audience any more. The female septet will again select from a repertoire of 16 languages and 9 centuries including world folk, pop, classical and more in their concert on Saturday, February 9th at 8pm at the San Geronimo Valley Community Center, 6350 Sir Francis Drake Blvd in San Geronimo 9 miles west of San Rafael. With selections ranging from Finnish, Macedonian & Japanese Folk, Bluegrass and Jazz as well as music from Palestrina, Joni Mitchell, Aretha Franklin, Edith Piaf and Bjork including original arrangements and original music, the 12-year old ensemble keeps stretching their limits.

“Our audiences have been enthralled by Solstice,” says Community Center event programmer Hannah Doress, “I’m proud to have introduced them to our community and I’m amazed at how they have reached a completely new level of musicianship this year.” Solstice has also reached a new level of visibility and recognition – first winning the 2007 San Francisco Regional Harmony Sweepstakes a cappella competition and award for best original arrangement (for Becca Burrington’s arrangement of Joni Mitchell’s song Blue) in San Francisco and then placing in the top 3 at the legendary national Harmony Sweeps which took place in San Rafael in a packed Civic Center auditorium this May. Not content to rest on these laurels the hard-working group hit the studio and is just completing their new album. While the CD will not be pressed in time for the Marin performance, attendees will receive free shipping for any CDs they order. “We’re thrilled to come back to the Community Center again and I love performing in my home community,” says Fairfax’s Emily Bender, a soprano who joined Solstice in 2004 and who is also a nutrition consultant and owner of the Fairfax-based Nutrition for the Whole Family, “We love the audiences that come to see us in San Geronimo and are excited to again premiere a new song for them.”

In the past the versatile group has tied for a runner-up slot in the 2001 A Capella Community Awards with the internationally famous Sweet Honey in the Rock (Solstice’s repertoire includes Sweet Honey song “Stay”), they’ve been seen at Freight and Salvage, Trinity Chamber Music Series, Noe Valley Ministries and many other venues. Members have performed in Carnegie Hall at the invitation of Meredith Monk, with Yo-Yo Ma, and have sung in the Tanglewood Festival Chorus, with the Grammy-nominated Pacific Mozart Ensemble and at the Aspen Festival. Advance ticket purchase recommended. Find out more about Solstice or listen to their music at www.SolsticeSings.com.

This event has a high likelihood of selling out again and we recommend, but do not require, advance ticket purchase. Please order your will call tickets by clicking on the green "Buy Tickets Now" link at http://www.sgvcc.org/artsevents/centerevents.html.
Thank you for your interest to our music.

Last summer we held a throat singing camp in Tuva.

We had 14 students from around the world - 8 of them were from the US, 2 from Australia
2 from Denmark, 1 from France, 1 from England.
After arriving in Tuva, the students spent 1 week in Kyzyl, the capital city.
They were able to see many tourist attractions, see a Tuvan shaman,
and attend the Naadym - National Harvest Celebration.

The students then went on to spend 1 week in the deep taiga, with members of the Tuvan throat singing group Chirgilchin,
learning various styles of throat singing, traditional Tuvan instruments, as well as the Tuvan language.

This summer, we are trying to get 2 groups to go to Tuva again, in either June or July.

Please let me know if you have any further questions.
The Richter Scales are searching for experienced vocalists to join them on their funfilled romp through the candy-colored world of a cappella. We're a group of approximately 16 guys between the ages of 25 and 35 who sing original arrangements and songs. Our style encompasses jazz, pop, and motown with an emphasis on entertaining audiences, displaying strong musicianship, and having a lot of fun doing whatever it is we're doing. Past performances have included the San Francisco Film Festival, the San Francisco Symphony, and the Harmony Sweepstakes as well as our own series of public concerts.

We only rehearse once a week in San Francisco (with the occasional compromise rehearsal on the peninsula), so strong reading skills and prior a cappella experience is encouraged.

JOB ANNOUNCEMENT

The EDLOS a cappella quartet is looking for a new bass. After 17 years, our bass is retiring from the
EDLOS, so the search has begun for his replacement!

What we're looking for:

- A true bass. Comfortable singing bass lines, leads, and using a falsetto.
- Someone with experience in both "pop" and classical music. Experience in jazz a plus.

- Experience in a very broad range of musical styles a huge plus.
- Experience in small ensemble a cappella singing.
- Ability to work as a team member.
- Ability to read music extremely well.
- Ability to arrange music for men's quartet a big plus.
- Some vocal percussion ability a plus.
- Ability to do vocal "instruments" a plus.
- Ability to interact well with audience.
- Sense of humor a must.
- Ability to "go with the flow."
- Must reside in the Greater SF Bay Area.

Job Description:

- Initially learning and memorizing a large volume of songs.
- Committing to one to two rehearsals per week, daytime rehearsals preferred.
- Being as available as possible for gigs as they come up. We all make a commitment to give priority to
EDLOS' bookings. We try to keep our performance calendars clear so that we are all available as jobs
come along.
- Must be available for short tours (usually 5 days max).
- Taking on other responsibilities in the group beyond performance responsibilities. (Possible examples:
graphics work, mailings, equipment storage, trip planning, etc.). Specifics will be based on interest
and capabilities. Initially, though, learning all the music will be work enough!
- Concerts require not only performance, but help with set-up/breakdown/ loading of P.A. system,
set-up/preparation of props and costumes, etc.
- Willingness to be a little zany. The EDLOS have a very theatrical presentation that includes wigs, hats,
costumes (sometime outrageous) and various props.
- Availability for unpaid promotional gigs such as live radio appearances and singing national anthems at
sporting events (little known fact: The EDLOS sang the last national anthem ever performed at a Golden
State Warriors' home playoff game).

Who are the EDLOS??
The EDLOS are a professional touring group with a long history of performing. The group has produced
8 CD's. At this point the group performs roughly 25-35 concerts per year. Most of these dates are in the
Greater Bay Area, some of them are out of state touring dates. The repertoire of the group covers a broad
range of music from classical to country to rock to originals that mix a number of styles of music. To find out
more about the group, go to www.theedlos.com.

I'm doing the Bach tour with my Choir this summr, and would like to prepare a little extra music to sing with friends. I did a similar thing on an italian tour a few years ago. Put together a quartet of friends and brought along a few motets and just sang in front of churches or wherever we could. Great fun. I'm having trouble finding anything that would be good for this trip. Thanks in advance for any help!

On Holy Thurdsday/Maundy Thursday I went to a church in Manhattan that ended the Service with the Miserere Mei of Allegri. Most people do not know this work by the composer name, which is obscure at best, but the work is often oddly familiar to people who have listened to classical radio over the years. It split into 3 choirs: 1 men plainchant, and two mixed antiphonal choirs in a big church with two galleries. It was the most magnificent a capella experience of the entire year. So if you get a chance to hear the work, imagine it broken into 3 choirs.
